Coma is a state of sleep from which someone may not wake up, usually caused by some form of trauma.
Irregular breathing, closed eyes and depressed brainstem reflexes are the common symptoms that come with this condition.
There are a number of factors that have been linked to this condition.
Here are some of the many causes of coma as noted by Neil Lava, MD, a neurologist;
1. Infections
Some infections such as meningitis and encephalitis can cause this condition. Meningitic is primely characterized by the inflammation of meninges which often leads to headache, neck stiffness, fever, chills, myalgia and vomiting.
Both the encephalitis and meningitis cause inflammation of the brain, spinal cord and tissues that surround the brain. These conditions result to coma.
2. Toxins
Prolong exposure to some toxins is more than dangerous. Some wreck the brain by causing coma. Toxins such as carbon monoxide and lead cause inflammation when they come in contact with tissues that surround the brain and spinal cord.
3. Drug and alcohol
Heavy consumption of alcohol and usage of certain illicit drugs is dangerous to your health. Cases of people dying of coma have been reported and this is common in people taking drugs. Alcohol consumption can result to coma. If you must booze alcohol, then take it in moderation.
4. Diabetes
It is a condition that occurs when insulin fails to get rid of excess sugar in the bloodstream. The condition is also believed to be a key causing factor of coma.
