Every evening between 5 and 5:30 pm, Joel Kibicho, an auto mechanic in Shabab Industrial market knows it’s time for his daily dose of coffee.
What started as way to promote the business of the young girl has developed into a craving, and he can no longer do without it and his day is never complete without the sip.
“The coffee has become something I always look forward to. Not that I am addicted but the daily cup of coffee has become part of me and I always look forward to it,” said Kibicho.
Kibicho is just one of the thousands who have recently joined the coffee drinking club which is being fuelled by coffee vendors who mostly operate from the late afternoons to late into the night.
These vendors have slowly turned a large population of Nakuru residents into regular coffee drinkers and are making a good profit on the side.
“I started the business when I was down to my last cents,” said Irene Wanjiku a single mother living in Rhonda who has however greatly grown her business over time.
The business has attracted a lot of young people who crisscross the streets of Nakuru CBD and estates selling their black brew and most have regular customers like Kibicho.
Apart from the street vendors who target the people in the streets and at their places of business, there are also business premises which have opened and are very popular with coffee lovers.
There is Java House at Westside Mall, Bustani just next to Merica Hotel, Moca Loca Coffee and Sisima Coffee, among others all serving the growing clientele of coffee drinkers.
