Police in Nakuru have arrested a middle-aged man after he allegedly impersonated an education officer and demanded a Sh50 000 bribe from a school.
Evans Osiako had demanded the money from Kingdom Heritage Models School based in Winners Chapel Nakuru at the Kenya Industrial Estate (KIE) grounds in Shabab estate.
According to the teachers, Osiako claimed he had been sent from the Ministry to assess the condition of the school. However, one of the teachers identified him and alerted the school head.
“He came and said that the environment is not good for learning and demanded the license. However when we produced it he started looking for other unrelated issues. When we asked for the ID he produced one but it had no seal. We started questioning him on simple issues like when the schools were being closed or even the name of the DO but he was unaware,” said Penina Macharia.
He reportedly became dodgy but when they wouldn’t relent he started becoming violent, breaking chairs in the school.
“We became adamant and demanded to know which office had sent him so that we ask what the cash was meant for. However, he started threatening us, asking if we knew who he was,” said Macharia.
A police officer, who sought anonymity, claimed that the man has been on police records for demanding cash in the name of the council.
“He was released from jail barely a month ago on a different case of trying to swindle the public. We appreciate the efforts by the public to help us arrest the conman,” said the officer. Said the officer.
He was taken to the Nakuru Central Police Station and will be arraigned in court tomorrow morning.
