The newly proposed education system has been received with many reactions among Kibera residents where some of them say that the new system will help their children as others have opposed the new system.
According to Alice Ayuma, a teacher, the new education is a good move for the education sector than the current system of 8-4-4 system that has not helped children with skills as required.
“The new system 2-6-6-3 will encourage pupils and students to specialise in areas where they are best in without wasting time as seen in the current system of education 8-4-4,” said Ayuma.
In the new curriculum, students are expected to study for 2-years in pre-primary, 6-years primary, 6-years high school and 3 years in university respectively.
“I support the new education system because it will minimize time well and resources as well unlike the current 8-4-4 curriculum,” said James Githonga, a resident in Kibera.
Julius Onyuri, another resident and a retired teacher said that though it will be hard for pupils and students to adjust to the newly proposed system but it will be of beneficial to many since many will have the opportunity to study at secondary school who were not to.
“Current teachers will need more time to adjust to the new system since they have been used to the current system 8-4-4. Teachers will need more time to adjust as well as pupils and students and this may consume more time I suppose,” said Zachariah Ng’eno, a resident.
Fred Matiangi, the education CS is expected to approve the new curriculum in July 2016.
