Two people died as a result of lack of oxygen on Wednesday evening while they were fetching water from a well at Mwateta village in Kabatini ward Bahati constituency.
40-year-old Stephen Njoroge went to fetch water from a well he had been drilling for the past two months in his farm at around 6:00 pm on the fateful day accompanied by two other men.
Mr Samuel Kariuki who was working with the late Njoroge at the time of the incident said: “The deceased used a rope to climb down the 80 feet deep well together with a generator he used to pump water.”
However the generator failed him twice, and minutes later he stated calling for help.
“The generator went off twice, and we could hear him calling for help but none of us was able to climb down the well,” he said.
Minutes later, 23-year-old John Mbugua arrived at the scene and volunteered to get into the well and rescue Mr Njoroge.
“He used the rope to climb down the well but after few minutes we could hear him shout from the well saying that he had found him but he was getting tired. We suspected he was running out of oxygen, they went silent,”said Mr Mwaura.
Area MCA Mr Paul Thuo said county rescue team arrived at the scene at around 8:30 pm but faced difficulties because the hole was so narrow and had to go back to get more tools to enable them access the two.
“They established that the hole was more than 80 feet deep and there was water that had occupied between 10 to 15 feet,” said the MCA.
They managed to retrieve the two bodies after four hours of combined efforts.
The two bodies were taken to the Nakuru County Mortuary.
