West Mugirango university students association now want area MP to increase allocation for university students from the current Sh10,000 per student to at least Sh15,000.

Speaking during their annual meeting at Nyamira on Tuesday, the students hailed the support from area MP James Gesami and said the new proposal would help a number of students to face the harsh economic times.

Chairman Jason Mogire said he was confident the CDF committee would adopt their proposal and warned of serious repercussions if the area leadership failed to adopt the proposal.

“On behalf of these students, we want to laud the area MP for a great job he is doing to promote education especially in higher institutions. We are however of the opinion that the kitty is increased to at least Sh15,000 since the global economy is having a serious effect on us while on session. We just advise that they implement it because they don’t have any option,” he said.

Mogire said a number of students were missing end semester exams due to inability to pay school fee in time and challenged the MP to consider fast tracking disbursement.

“We not only want them to increase the allocation but also fast track disbursement. We are not happy for what we saw this semester (September-December) because a number of us missed exams due to delay from the CDF committee,” Mogire added.
