Veteran politician Koigi Wa Wamwere has called for the establishment of the office of opposition leader.
Since former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's lose to President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2017 polls, Odinga has been actively pushing for constitutional changes seeking to expand the executive.
However, Wamwere on Saturday poked holes into the same, terming it a plot by the leader and his allies to access the government even after losing.
He noted that the nation cannot be subjected to constitutional changes to please a specific group of persons, further terming it a plot to impress some tribal chiefs.
"Juhudi hizi ni za kutafutia watu kutoka nyumba kubwa za kikabila kazi na hii ni kinyume cha demokrasia (These are efforts to create jobs for tribal kingpins which is against democracy)," he said.
Wamwere made the remarks during an interview on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi's Cheche show on Saturday evening.
He proposed that Raila should instead be given his respect as the opposition leader, and accorded all the needed privileges, including a salary, to enable him effectively serve in that capacity.
"Raila kama kiongozi wa upinzani apewe nyumba, mshahara na ofisi kama vile Uhuru alipewa wakati mmoja. Lazima tupe upinzani heshima. (As the leader of opposition, let Raila be given a house, salary and an office as Uhuru was once given. We must accord the opposition respect)," added the former Assistant Minister.
