Education cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i announced last month that top performers in the last Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations will sit for a merit test before joining university.
While we do not know clearly what will happen to those who will fail this examination, it will finally expose those schools who drill their students with the aim of just passing exams without regards to wholistic development of a learner.
The merit test will also confirm allegations of cheating in exams, a menace that is so rampant in our secondary schools and universities.
By admitting qualified students to our universities, cases of cheating in our universities may also just reduce and with dedicated lecturers,'half-baked' graduates will be a thing of the past.
I think KNEC will turn a new leaf with noble initiatives like these. Let us support Matiang'i on this.
