Police have moved to quell tension in Kibigori area at the border of Kisumu and Nandi Counties following a spate of cattle rustling in the area.
Cattle rustlers on Thursday night drove away 5 animals from Muhoroni constituency sparking chaos in the area that has left two people with arrow wounds.
Residents of Muhoroni Friday morning went to Nandi side and took away 20 animals from the grazing field in retaliation.
They drove away the animals and hid them, with a condition that the five animals stolen must be returned to the owner.
This angered residents of Nandi who have stormed the area demanding back their animals, occasioning a standoff.
Police from the two counties are already in the area trying to bring peace between the two warring communities.
Chemelil ward representative Joseph Osano has appealed for calm in the area and asked the police to find an amicable way of solving the dispute without losing lives.
“It is quite unfortunate that in this 21st century communities still grapple with the issue of cattle rustling. We have fertile land let our people embrace farming. I am only appealing for peace in the area,” he said.
Markets have been paralysed as the two communities continue to remain hostile over cattle rustling cases.
Kisumu County Commissioner John Elungata had earlier announced that they have 50 names of cattle rustlers and those who sell meat from the stolen animals.
