This comes due to the directive from the government to increase forest cover in the country.

However, the Director of Kenya Forest Service Emilio Mugo, who speaking his office in Nairobi said they are in talks with Kenya power to adopt a progressive approach so that large scale farmers who have heavily invested in tree farming with the aim of selling to Kenya Power can still benefit as they seek alternatives.

As this gradual process takes place, KFS is urging farmers to think about selling their trees to other manufacturers and processors of tree products.

"We have always supported farmers in planting trees in large tracts of land in order to sell them to Kenya Power. However, Kenya Power says the concrete poles are cost effective and durable and so we will engage farmers to seek alternatives," Emilio Mugo said.
