Raila Odinga has dismissed claims that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) is all about ensuring that he succeeds President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
Speaking at the Bukhungu Stadium on Saturday, the former prime minister said he does not have to be president.
He said that the BBI was all about introducing structures for posterity and ensuring that the country gets a good head of state.
''2022 is going to be an event, it will come and go, but Kenya will continue. That is what BBI stands for. Raila Odinga dose not have to be the president of Kenya, but Kenya must have a good president, '' the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader said.
Raila's remarks were a direct response to those who have accused him of using the BBI to advance his political interests by improving his prospects for becoming Kenya's next president.
That accusation has, by and large, been made by allies of the Deputy President Dr William Ruto.
The BBI report was launched over a month ago by President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Bomas of Kenya.
It is a product of the dramatic handshake between Uhuru and the ODM leader which happened in 2018 after months of political tensions.
