In the graphic footage, the ill-fated lumbering animal is seen enduring unimaginable pain as people cut it with axes and machettes.

It is on its knees after having its hind legs cut.

In the tweet, Ali Manzu expressed his shock at the graphic violence on display in the video, saying that it was not acceptable.

"No way! This is not right fellow #Kenya cc @kwskenya @Karimi_Karen, " the Ali Manzu tweet read.

The video underscores the shocking realities of the wildlife-human conflict that are common in areas populated by wild animals.

It was not immediately clear why the residents in the video decided to take the law into their hands instead of engaging the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to keep the animal at bay.

Early this year, KWS issued an alert on the increased incidences of human-wildlife conflict.

"Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) wishes to notify the public that the ongoing dry spell being experienced in most parts of the country is displacing wildlife from their traditional habitats in search of pasture and water. This has increased conflict as the wildlife comes into contact with the public and human activities.KWS wishes to inform the public that as the dry spell progresses, the risk of human-wildlife conflict is expected to increase until the country receives the long rains, " KWS wrote.
