Suspected Al-Shabaab militants and National Police Reservists (NPR) in Kheira Ali village, Bambo Location in Lafey, Mandera on Tuesday exchanged fire following an attack. One person is reportedly nursing injuries after he was hit by a bullet.
The injured person, who is an Islamic madrasa teacher, was later identified as Isaack Abdi Bulle. In an interview with Nation, Wankara MCA Ahmed Gabnan Ali said that the militia destroyed a communication mast in the area.
He also revealed that one police reservist is yet to be traced following the incident. Ali said that the residents heard gunshots at 1 a.m. adding that the attack lasted for hours.
“The enemy struck at about 1am and by morning hours gun sounds still rendered the air,” he said, as quoted by Daily Nation.
The lawmaker has now urged the national government to put in place stringent measures to curb cases of terror attack in the region.
He said that the government should coordinate police to ensure the enemies are forced out of the area with immediate effect.
“That area remains very insecure and I call on the national government to ensure the enemy is flashed out before the population census happening this weekend,” he said, as quoted by Daily Nation. The attack comes at a time when Kenya and Somalia are yet to agree on the border issue.
