Thirty one private nursery schools in Yatta Sub-County have been shut down for operating illegally.
Speaking on Saturday in his office, Yatta Sub-County education officer Elikana Nyaga said some of the schools were operating behind bars and kiosks.
Nyaga who was accompanied by Yatta MP Francis Mwangangi said that majority of the schools which were shut down include kindergartens and a few going up to standard one.
The education officer said the schools were shut down because they had not registered with the Ministry of Education.
"Most of the schools were operating in uncondusive environments for learning," he said.
He said that the most affected area was Kinyaatta with ten schools being shut down, followed by Kithimani with seven, Ikombe and Ndalani with six, Mavoloni with five and lastly Matuu with three.
“Most of the schools had a population of less than ten children. I have ordered the students to be transfered to registered schools in the area,” said Nyaga.
The education officer urged anybody planning to start a school within the sub-county to follow the right procedures and ensure the schools are registered.
