The governors, through their chairman, Peter Munya have threatened the government of calling for a referendum if the money for county devolved functions is not released.

Munya spoke on Wednesday where he argued that the money allocated to the county government by the national government is too little. This is an opposite of what the president wants since President Uhuru Kenyatta said during a governor’s meeting last month that the governors’ money will be slashed a little.

Munya now wants the county funds increased from 15% to 33% for easier functioning of the county government.

‘‘It will be easier to work for the people while we have enough funds in the county offices,’’ he said.

He revealed that the way money is being shared in Kenya is not fair, keeping in mind the money is being handled at the national level but county governments are the ones being left with a lot of responsibilities.

‘‘County governments are entitled to build roads, boost agriculture for residents and carry out other developments but there is no money in the counties to do all these jobs. The money we have is too little for such giant projects,’’ he stated.
