Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama has reiterated his commitment to equipping Nyamira level five hospital to acquire referral status.
Nyagarama who was donating a number of equipment to the hospital among them cancer scanning machine on Wednesday said his government will work with speed to ensure the county hospital is elevated to level six status in eight months’ time.
He said his administration will recruit more medics and expand its departments to reduce incidents of people travelling out of the county to seek medical treatment.
“We are determined as a county to ensure our county hospital is properly equipped so that it handles a host of cases without people necessarily seeking medical treatment outside our county. We will recruit more medics and increase the departments so that cases such as brain surgery are done within and that’s my priority,” he said.
The Nyamira County boss said his government had set aside Sh100 million that will aid in improving infrastructure within the hospital, with housing of medics being given first priority.
“We have set aside Sh100 million which we expect to be used in improving infrastructure within the hospital. We want our doctors to operate from within and add another structure that will handle increasing number of people seeking services from the hospital. I am sure within eight months, the hospital will be ready for elevation to level six status,” he said.
He warned medics against smuggling drugs meant for public consumption and challenged the Ministry of Health to sack officials who will be found culpable.
“My government has invested in drugs meant for public use and it’s wrong that we still hear cases of smuggling. I want the Ministry of Health to crack the whip on those responsible,” he said.
