The Ministry of Education has yet against been faulted over its failure to rank schools in national exams.
On Wednesday, Education CS Fred Matiang’i stuck to the policy while releasing this year's KCPE examinations results by giving scanty details about the general performance of the candidates countrywide and only stuck to matters on gender parity and exam malpractices.
In an exclusive interview on Wednesday with this writer, a renowned academician Dr Nyandoro Kambi, said ranking should be reintroduced to ensure competition among schools.
“Fair competition is important in matters academics. It becomes very difficult for schools to assess themselves when there is no ranking. It’s a wake up call now for the ministry to reintroduce ranking so that schools can be able to compete among themselves,” he said.
According to him, performance among schools will likely to decline since institutions are unable to assess their overall performance in relation to others.
“I bet that we will continue seeing decline in results because when ranking isn’t done, some schools will not see the reason to work even harder to dislodge those who defeated them. Even in the corporate world, ranking is done to assess the overall performance,” he added.
During this year's KCPE results, Education CS revealed that performance in public schools declined from 187 marks average to 180 marks.
