Teachers affiliated to Masaba KNUT branch have been cautioned against missing classes without informing the authorities.
This comes after branch revealed that it was battling to save four teachers who were interdicted for allegedly prolonging their absenteeism by the ministry of education.
Speaking at Masaba branch offices in Keroka on Wednesday, Deputy Secretary General Mr James Oteki said the branch would distance itself from teachers who were persistently reported of having violated the code of ethics by the ministry.
“We all understand that the union’s role is to defend teachers’ rights. But at the same time, we ought to admit that some silly mistakes like prolonging absenteeism without permission is unacceptable. We cannot take our time to defend such errant teachers and that is a fact,” he said.
Oteki said the union supported improved performances in schools through the collective effort of all stakeholders with teachers expected to do their part.
“For instance, we are battling to save four teachers who are accused of being out of service without permission. As much as we safeguard the interests of our teachers, they too have a role to play because we want everyone to do their part so that we record improved performances in our schools,” he said.
He, however, cautioned head teachers for pushing for interdiction of teachers without inviting the union for fair hearing.
“But that does not mean we discriminate teachers. They must be given a fair hearing through us and whoever deprives them that will be equally met with our wrath as a union,” he added.
