Parents from Mavoko sub county have been urged to avoid harassing children over poor performance in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations.
The call was made by Bondeni Children Rescue Centre's director Florence Gitau, who said some parents from the region were well known for punishing their children whenever they failed in either KCPE or KCSE examinations.
"I call on all parents from Mavoko to take positively their children results and avoid exposing them to unnecessary punishments in case they fail to excel," said Gitau.
Gitau who addressed the press at the home on Wednesday said parents should know that not all children are equal hence there performances can not be the same.
She condemned parents who use their neighbours, friends or relatives' children sterling performances to compare with results of their own children and thereafter mount pressure on them.
Gitau said every child has a strong area even if he/she is not academically blessed.
She argued that inserting pressure on such children only because of poor performances in examinations can lead to child rebellion.
"Children can rebel and run away to streets from their comfortable homes," she said.
Gitau said according to life experience, she is aware of children who had ended up on streets because of such a reason and ended up rejecting their parents completely.
She disclosed that a few of such children were among those hosted at the rescue centre after they were found selling scrape metal to earn a livelihood.
