Voter registration centres in Mombasa registered a high turn out for people registering as voters.

Majority of residents who went to registration centres were youth.

A survey by this writer revealed that residents queued under the scorching sun to get registered.

Youth in Mombasa have vowed to register as voters in large numbers.

The youth said they want to ensure that their voices count in the 2017 elections.

They said their failure to register as voters in the last polls led to election of leaders who they accuse of forgetting the pledges they made in the run-up to the 2013 elections.

However, they have declared that 2017 will be different as they are banking on their numerical advantage to dictate the outcome of the elections.

"I never registered in 2013. I regret my decision because we ended up having leaders who are selfish. I have since learnt from that," said Peter Kiilu.

Evans Panyako also had the same story.

He said that he is going to mobilise other youth to ensure that they are armed with their votes.

"We have learnt from our past mistakes. Am going to try my best to ensure that all my friends get registered," he said at Likoni as he was going to get registered.

The youth further said they are going to change the political landscape of Mombasa through their numerical advantage.

"This is just the beginning. We want to determine our own destiny," said Paul Otula.

The general reaction of the residents of Mombasa to voter registration is seen as a game changer in Mombasa politics and the voting process.
