Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has apologised over the unprecedented exams irregularities witnessed in the 2015 national exams.

He said: " I want to directly look into the face of Kenyans, and as the CS, presently in charge of Education, I want to apologise over the witnessed massive exams irregularities."

He said this during the release of 2015 KCSE results on Thursday in which Kisumu's Maseno merged among top schools nationally.

On Tuesday, the Senate Committee on Education said it was concerned about the results, given the massive cases of irregularities reported.

The committee chairman, Daniel Karaba said: "The examination was characterised by a lot of cheating. We saw it, heard about it, and read about it."

Mr Karaba said this during a meeting with the CS.

While launching the release of the results, the CS said that there was an unprecedented 70 per cent rise in cases of exam irregularities.

He mentioned that the results of 5,101 candidates were cancelled.

This is a rise from 2,975 cases in the previous year.

Matiang'i also mentioned that irregularities were reported in all counties except Isiolo.

Three counties, Nairobi, Makueni and Meru recorded the highest number of exam cheating cases.

The CS also said that no centre had its results cancelled wholesomely.

525,802 candidates sat for the KCSE exams last year.
