Foreign Affairs CS Amina Mohamed could be the first East African to chair the Africa Union.

This is after President Uhuru Kenyatta forwarded her name to the AU ahead of the organization elections in January 2017.

Mohamed will face off with Agapito Mba Mokuy of Equatorial Guinea, Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal and Botswana’s Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi .

This is after contenders in the previous elections held in Kigali, Rwanda failed to garner the required two-thirds of the votes.

According to President Uhuru, Amina's name was proposed due to her exemplary work under the foreign affairs docket.

Amina has overseen the country hold various global conferences including the Global Entrepreneurship summit, World Trade Organization’s 14th Ministerial Conference and14th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Kenyatta said this at the state house during the youth summit that started today.
