The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) today embarked on a road sensitisation programme for drivers of public service vehicles in Kibera area.
The purpose of this was to make the drivers see the need to observe safety on the roads. The programme aims at equipping the drivers with road safety regulations to minimise road accidents.
Two senior officials from the authority, Stephen Musau and Aden Mohamed said the first phase targets over 400 drivers who operate from the area. Mohammed said all the operators in the transport sector were important but noted that efforts should be made to ensure each category of vehicles is consigned to where it belonged.
“We are looking into ensuring the number of accidents in the area reduces and that can be enhanced through training drivers,” he said.
He said county governments should be strict in ensuring that Probox vehicles operate as taxis and not as matatus. He accused the Probox drivers of picking and dropping passengers from any point in the area in total disregard of the designated areas for picking and dropping off passengers.
The road safety sensitisation workshop comes in the wake of a series of accidents in the area, with the most recent involving a matatu which rammed into another as they tried to outdo each other for passengers.
