A section of leaders from Mombasa have faulted Governor Hassan Joho for leading anti-IEBC protests in the Coastal county.
The leaders said the protests are likely to affect the economy of the region considering it is still recovering from the effects of insecurity.
Addressing journalists at the Palm Tree Hotel in Mombasa on Tuesday, Nominated Senator Emma Mbura, said the governor should focus more on important issues affecting the county rather than taking part in the protests.
On his part, Mombasa politician Suleiman Shahbal, said the anti-IEBC protests were unconstitutional, and called on the Cord coalition to follow the law in demanding for the disbandment of the electoral body.
“The demand by the opposition that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials should vacate office goes against laid-down procedures in the Constitution,” said Shahbal.
Senator Mbura's sentiments were echoed by Likoni MP Masoud Mwahima who said the demonstrations will affect the tourism sector in the region.
“The tourism sector is recovering but the protests will discourage potential visitors and investors from visiting Mombasa,” said Mwahima.
He further urged the three Cord principals to respect the Constitution.
Likoni Uwezo Fund chairman Salim Abdalla expressed fear of protesters dying during the demonstrations as it was witnessed on Monday, where three people lost their lives after the protests turned violent in Kisumu and Siaya.
