For the past two weeks, several parts of Nakuru town have experienced a wave of insecurity.

This has left most, if not all, residents scared to be out of their houses when the sun goes to sleep.

What is worse is that the perpetrators of the violence begin their ‘trade’ as early as 6am and 7pm when no one is suspecting. I guess they are aiming for the element of surprise.

Almost every community has been affected. 

The worst hit is probably Flamingo estate and its environs, where vigilantes were butchering people without necessarily stealing anything. It was outright murder. 

Resident of White House area haven’t been left behind also. 

Two separate incidents involving an exchange of fire between the police and armed criminals have unfolded over the past two weeks.

A while back the Nyumba Kumi initiative was launched and one of its key goals was to help curb insecurity.

We seem to have fallen short of meeting this goal and it is perhaps time we changed that. 

As much as it’s the police job is to keep us safe, truth is, they can’t do it alone.

Let’s join hands and help where we can. 

Report the people responsible for this acts and let justice take its course. 

Furthermore, let’s implement the community policing and Nymuba Kumi initiatives as well make police patrols regularly.

Nakuru is fast approaching the likes of Nairobi who have a 24/7 economy. Security is a crucial component of such an economy. 

The days of ‘sirkal saidia’ are behind us and it’s time we all contributed to curbing this menace. 

As the Swahili saying goes; ‘kidole kimoja hakivunji chawa’. It will take us all to tame and end insecurity.
