Six people have been pronounced dead following a tragic road accident occurred on Saturday night at Nyakairu-Kinungi stretch along Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
A matatu and canter lorry collided head-on after the matatu driver attempted to overtake a convoy of vehicles.
According to Peter Kariuki, a witness, the incident happened at around 8:50 PM.
"The matatu driver headed towards Nairobi swerved to the right, crashing into a lorry coming from the opposite direction," he explained as quoted by Nation.
The accident as explained by Kariuki was horrific. Efforts to save the victims were fruitless as they were trapped inside the vehicles.
Naivasha Sub-County Deputy Police Commander John Kwasa said five people, as well as the driver of the lorry, died on the spot.
"The matatu driver died while being rushed to the Naivasha-based healthy facility. Initial investigations indicate the matatu driver was at fault, occasioning the accident," said Kwasa.
Kinungi stretch according to a number of witnesses has been described as a black spot due to an increasing number of accidents occurring in the area.
''We have lost so many lives and the only solution is the construction of a dual carriageway," noted Kariuki.
Ten passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Naivasha sub-county hospital.
