Major General George Owinoh on Saturday formally assumed his new roles as Deputy Force Commander (Support and Logistics) in Somalia, the highest by KDF officer in AMISOM.
Kenya first deployed troops to the war-torn nation in 2011 but the forces would later join United Nations-sponsored AMISOM troops in 2012.
Since then, besides suffering a host of casualties, KDF has managed to liberate a host of towns among them Kismayo in Jubaland.
On Saturday, Major General Owinoh was received by African Union Mission team in Somalia, as he assumes roles of coordinating the training of Somali National Army (SNA).
"Major General George Owinow, the Deputy Force Commander (Support & Logistics) for @amisomsomalia paid a courtesy call on the Special Representative of the Chairperson of @_AfricanUnion Commission and Head of @amisomsomalia @AmbFMadeira upon assumption of his office in Mogadishu," KDF tweeted.
Kenya Defence Forces team is set to strategically leave the Horn of Africa nation by 2021 after elections.
The team mainly mans Jubaland.
On Friday, the United Nations team in Somalia lauded Kenya for efforts towards stabilising the nation. UNSOM Ambassador James Swan and UNSOS boss Lisa Filipetto visited Nairobi on Friday.
"We viewed the political and security situation in the Horn region as well as the AMISOM operations in Somalia," tweeted Monica Juma, the Foreign Affairs minister.
"Both envoys commended the role of Kenya and her demonstrated commitment in the pursuit of peace and security in Somalia and the Horn of Africa. Kenya’s commitment is to remain a reliable partner of the UN in the region and beyond," she added.
