Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has vowed to shut down some betting companies starting next week.
Speaking on Saturday at Mekonge SDA, Sensi ward in Kitutu Chache North Kisii County where he attended a church service, the CS stated that some betting companies are operating illegally.
"I have received a report and as from next week, we will shut down some betting companies because of these people operating the businesses don't even pay taxes. We can not build a country on betting," stated Matiang'i.
He urged youths to shun engaging in gambling games.
Matiang'i regretted that criminal cases have been on the rise because youths steal so that they can get money to gamble with.
"Our youths are turning themselves to be thieves stealing just to get money for gambling. I will not allow the lives of our youths to be ruined through gambling n this country. Betting companies which fail to adhere to the law will be shut down," he declared.
He urged police to intensify a crackdown starting next week in Nyamira and Kisii counties to shut down betting shops admitting minors and those that are operating without licenses.
