Schools from Nyamira County have been challenged to rally for environmental conservation in the region by engaging in tree planting activities.

Naomi Nyagarama on Thursday when donating trees to Misambi Mixed Secondary School said area institutions have a key role in championing for environmental conservation.

She said the county leadership was willing to support institutions by delivering seedlings that would be planted in various regions and water catchment areas.

“Previously during my school days, institutions were in the fore front when it came to environmental conservation. And that means that they (institutions) have a key role in environmental protection. The county government is willing to support them by delivering seedlings that should be planted in water catchment areas and even in schools,” she said.

Mrs Nyagarama urged school heads to hold talks with the county’s forestry service to come up with a program that will see representatives of the institutions hold tree planting exercises across the county.

“I have communicated to a number of school heads and I hope they will visit the county forestry department to come up with a tree planting program so that we sensitise our people on the importance of environmental conservation. The exercise will be effective if our children in schools participate,” said the county governor's wife.

During the visit, Nyamira South institutions received 400 seedlings of Bougainvillea tree.

Mrs Nyagarama also promised to run a parallel campaign that will sensitise the residents about environmental conservation.
