The County government of Nyamira has put on notice all those violating children’s rights even as it promised to fully implement the African charter on the rights and welfare of children.
According to Nyamira Executive for Gender, Youth and Social Services Peter Ogwara, the county government of Nyamira was committed to ensuring that all legal provisions spelt out in the charter are enforced and perpetrators prosecuted.
The executive regretted that many repugnant cultural practices exist that still abuse the rights of children especially the girl-child.
He made the remarks in a speech during gender and youth stakeholders meeting held early Thursday morning at Gurdian Hotel in Nyamira.
“As the county government of Nyamira, we will not wait and see the girl child suffer when we all know the laws that govern us,” he added.
He also called on parents, families, communities and the whole country to make deliberate efforts to end early marriages, saying it was important to allow the girls grow, develop and mature properly during childhood.
