After the establishment of sh10 billion restoration funds last year, the funds that were to be used to compensate the 2007/2008 post-election violence sexual victims and other victims, nothing of the sort has happened.

Even if this has happened for some of the victims, they say the compensation is very little. This has been confirmed by the United Nations (UN), United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and other civil rights groups in Kenya.

48 year old Jacqueline Mutere from Kibera said she has been facing stigmatisation and rejection from both her family and the community at large.

‘‘The post-election violence really scarred me, however, some of people who went through sexual assault during the violence have been given land in other places, and I still believe their mind is not settled. Sexual assault like rape is something that is hard to forget,’’ she said.

Jacque also said the children born out of the rape incidences are not being well received by the public like other children.

‘‘It was not our wish to get pregnant. Things happen in life and sometimes they are beyond our explanation. I have a problem getting a birth certificate for my child because I cannot produce the documents of the father. I am at a crossroads,’’ said another victim who asked to remain anonymous.
