Matatu Workers Association has called upon the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to work together with the traffic department to remove bumps erected on highways.
Speaking on Friday in Nyamira where they held election for their national leaders, they said that the bumps erected by locals were not helping reduce the accidents, and were instead becoming a death trap.
Drivers said that the bumps posed a great risk since no signs are being placed to warn them, adding that it was impossible to control vehicles as they are surprised without signage.
"We are urging the NTSA and the traffic police department to arrest and take serious action on the locals who are erecting road pumps, they are putting the lives of the road users at risk, they are not saving any situation by doing so but worsening it," said John Obuba, a bus driver.
On her part, Nyamira traffic base commandant Ms Maggie Munini said that already the police have arrested over 20 culprits accused of erecting the bumps, with others already having been charged over the same.
"It is an offense for any local to put up any bump on our roads, it's the work of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and roads engineer. Anybody found doing so will be arrested and charged for intention to cause death,".
