The Act that was signed into law by the President last month provides clear guidance on mining activities in the country.

The president on Monday handed over the Act to the Cabinet Secretary at State House, Nairobi, before traveling to Angola where he will attend the 6th Ordinary Summit of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region on Tuesday.

Receiving a copy of the new Act, the Mining Cabinet Secretary exuded confidence that the law will streamline the country’s mining sector and open the gates for its development as well as ensure environmental conservation.

“This Act injects predictability and certainty that will fuel rapid expansion and sustainable development of the mining sector,” said Mr Kazungu.

The Cabinet Secretary termed the Act as one of the “most progressive mining laws in the continent”.

He said the new Mining Act 2016 – which is aligned to Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Kenya Constitution 2010 – repeals the colonial laws on mining that were counterproductive.
