A top Kenya National Union of Teachers official from Masaba branch has accused Education Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i of concentrating on ‘petty’ issues following Wednesday’s decision to interdict seven directors from Siaya County.
Matiangi fired the officials from county following a decision to allow the mock examinations which he termed as illegal. The papers also had a photo of Governor Cornell Rasanga.
And now James Oteki, the deputy secretary general condemned the move terming it ‘unnecessary’ and challenged Matiang'i to handle real issues facing the education sector.
“I think the CS has lost focus on real matters affecting the delivery of quality education in our country. It’s laughable to victimise some officials over a portrait of someone who sponsored an examination,” he said.
“We have a host of issues such as understaffing, poor payment of teachers and even national examination leakages that should be given first priority. It’s wrong to focus on officials’ maybe who had allowed the papers because they were merely sponsored by the Governor,” he added.
Oteki also challenged the CS to focus on improving the infrastructure of schools citing the example of Kebuse Primary which allegedly neighbours the minister's home in Borabu.
“Some of our schools are on the verge of collapsing and I can give an example of Kebuse Primary which just neighbours the CS in his Borabu home. Those are the real issues that we should deal with,” he said.
