The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) says it now needs sh2.9 billion and not the proposed sh2.7 billion in their 2016-2017 budget.
This was said by the commission’s chairman, Philip Kinisu when he appeared before the parliament on Wednesday. According to Kinisu, the sh500 that the commission is asking for is to be used to hire more staff since the commission is short of staff. He said that the commission has more than 17,000 corruption cases and scandals that need to be handled yet there are only 200 investigators to tackle the cases.
He says the money will be used to hire a total number of 140 investigators, 140 Huduma Centre officers, 30 report analysts and 50 police operations assistants. He said the commission will use part of the money to buy equipment.
This comes days after Keriako Tobiko revealed that there were so many cases lying in the courts as pressure mounted on the EACC to show how they carry out their duties after the commission cleared former devolution and planning CS, Anne Waiguru and recalled her to be probed.
