President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday called newly appointed UK Prime Minster Theresa May.

In a statement sent to newsrooms by the British High Commission, Uhuru called May to congratulate her following her appointment into office.

“President Kenyatta of Kenya called the Prime Minister today to congratulate her on her appointment,” read the statement.

The President reassured May of Kenya's commitment in its relationship with the UK, which he said is based on shared values and common interests.

“He told her that Kenya greatly values its relationship with the UK, which is based on shared values and common interests,” added the statement.

On her part, May underlined Britain's commitment to continuing to build on ties in a number of important areas such as trade and investment, defence and counter-terrorism

She further welcomed Kenya’s recent ratification of the Defence Cooperation Agreement.

The call was ended by looking forward to meeting at the earliest opportunity.
