It is really saddening that prisons have become recruitment and training centres for jihadists.

This has, however, not been scrutinised as a menace in the nation there before.

A study done in Kenya by the Hans Seidel Foundation according to the Daily Nation on June 3 this year shows that the nation is ill fun prisons, turning them into thriving recruitment grounds.

The rising influence of Islam in Kenyan prisons is due to the outside influence of Islamic terror organisations or a uniformed prison power structure. The number of prison wardens is questionable too.

According to President Uhuru Kenyatta during a passing out of prison wardens in February, he said that more money would be provided to meet logistical and operational requirements of the prison service. He also promised to set up a special prison for violent terrorists but did not mention where or when it would be constructed.

Currently, only death row inmates are kept in a separate prison blocks from the rest of the convicts. A separate prison for convicted terrorists would probably work as suggests earlier by President Kenyatta. However, I think the government should come up with a better rehabilitation programme to prevent the suspects from backsliding.
