This was the message told to Maseno University students on Thursday during a Contraceptive Awareness Day.

The event held at the University’s Graduation Square aimed at imparting knowledge on the use of different contraceptives and birth control methods.

While addressing the students, Jonathan Mateka, from IPAS Kenya said that the contraceptives were good if well used.

He said that the different brands of contraceptives in the market were meant for prevention of pregnancies and also other Sexually Transmitted Infections.

He however, warned that E-pills were only meant to be used during emergencies and should not be used more than four times a year.

He warned that if used in excess, they could trigger hormonal imbalance that may result to tender breasts and irregular monthly periods.

“E-pills can be taken after emergencies like rape or after sexual intercourse,” said Mr Jonathan.

Martha Kaguara, also from IPAS Kenya encouraged the sexually active students to embrace the use of condoms.

She told the students that condoms if well used had the ability to protect the females from unwanted pregnancies besides also protecting the two parties from Sexually Transmitted Infections.

“Condoms are dual protectors,” she said.

She nonetheless warned that there were reports on counterfeit contraceptives in the market.

She said contraceptives should only be bought from trusted chemists and not hawkers and that they should be counter checked for expiry dates.
