Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed that he was hired as a census enumerator in the 1999 national headcount drive.
The Senate Majority Leader made the revelation after photos leaked online showing him preparing tea for enumerators who went to collect his biodata.
In the photo, the vocal lawmaker is seen preparing tea in a traditional kitchen and setting up a fire from a bunch of firewood.
Besides the traditional three-stone fireplace is a sufuria with tea, and other utensils. The senator rests on a stool busy preparing some tea.
He says that he also served as an enumerator 20 years back, therefore, he knows that the group needed something for their stomach before proceeding.
“The Census team deserve at least a cup of tea. I know it because I was an enumerator in the Census 1999. In so far as the source of energy we use for cooking in my village is concerned, you can definitely guess the answer,” he explained.
The exercise which began on Saturday evening is expected to run for a week, with the state seeking to use the results from the census drive to plan and allocate resources.
