The secretary-general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Francis Atwoli has weighed in on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
Speaking on Saturday in Kitui county during a BBI meeting, Mr Atwoli called for an expansion of the executive that would do away with the winner-takes-it-all system.
"This BBI must look into the system that allows only two people to share spoils after winning elections. We must expand the executive. (Hii BBI lazima iangalie mambo ya watu wawili kushinda uchaguzi kisha wanakimbia na kiti wanaenda. Lazima tupanue uongozi)," the renowned trade unionist said.
The question of whether to expand the executive has formed a major part of the national discourse around the BBI.
A section of politicians has strongly raised objections to the prospect of an expanded executive, saying that it would add more weight on the shoulders of the Kenyan taxpayer.
Proponents of the expansion hold the view that it would do away with the tensions that have pervaded past elections.
Among the proposals on how to go about it is to create the position of a powerful prime minister and deputies that will ensure that leaders of the major political parties are not consigned to oblivion after losing elections.
