Mr Hailey was received by Mr Odinga and the two are said to have discussed the foreign relationship between London and Nairobi, which dates back to the colonial period.

"Saying farewell to RtHon @RailaOdinga this morning. It was good to hear him say, as the UK has also done, that leaders charged with corruption need to step aside from their offices, including those Governors who have been indicted," wrote Mr Hailey.

Mr Odinga has been an anti-corruption crusader for decades. UK has been helping in the fight against corruption, a message which was stressed by the outgoing envoy.

In June, Ms Jane Marriott, the director of United Kingdom government’s Joint International Counter-Terrorism Unit, was announced as a successor of the outgoing envoy Nic Hailey.

“Ms Marriott is the first woman to be appointed to the role. She brings a wealth of experience to the position, having worked across many UK government departments including the foreign and commonwealth office, the cabinet office, the home office and the ministry of defence,” read a statement sent to newsrooms by Ms Alice Simpson, the British Commission’s head of communications, Kenya and Somalia.

Ms Marriott previously served as Her Majesty’s ambassador to Yemen, and British deputy ambassador to Iran, and has also undertaken postings in the US, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr Odinga was a chief critic of Mr Hailey and former US ambassador Robert Godec with their relationship deteriorating during the hotly contested 2017 polls. The two had termed the polls credible.

But Supreme Court of Kenya nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta's victory, a move that gave Mr Odinga an advantage against the two envoys. However, the two later reconciled.
