As the world prepares to mark the end of 2015, anxious parents and guardians have started flocking bookstores and uniform shops in readiness for the new term beginning Monday.

With Friday being a public holiday - New Year’s Day- many parents have very few days left to make their purchases before the long weekend sets in.

On Tuesday, two of Nakuru’s popular uniform distribution stores located on the busy Kenyatta Avenue were a beehive of activity as shoppers rushed to beat the last minute jams.

Huge crowds were seen queuing outside the two stores which are just a stone’s throw away from each other at lunchtime waiting for the shops to reopen.

“I want to buy a school uniform for my son whom I’ve had transferred from a government school to a boarding private school. I can assure you the congestion will be worse next week as schools reopen and most of these people you see here have past experiences,” explained Lydia Wangari, a fresh food seller at Wakulima Market.

Huge crowds of shoppers were also observed at Gilani’s, various supermarkets and bookstores.

“We have been experiencing a lean period since schools closed but with the new term almost here, sales have gone up this week,” said Peter Ndirangu, a clerk at a town bookshop.
