Residents of Rhonda and Kaptembwa in Nakuru West have expressed fears of a new cholera outbreak following the resurgence of illicit liquor brewing in the area.
The irate residents claim that the liquor, which is being sold during the day, was responsible for last year’s outbreak and spread of cholera in the area which left at least 17 people dead and more than 300 under treatment.
Speaking to the press in the area on Thursday youth leaders pointed out that the presence of the illicit drinks which attracted hundreds of residents was now worrying.
“The fact that it is even being prepared under unhygienic conditions and the health department is aware of this yet they are doing nothing is just sickening,” said Hamisi Ngutu, a youth leader.
Hamisi said that the drinks, which are often popular in the area, are the fastest means to transmit the disease.
“Last time the outbreak started from a drinking den and we have confirmed rumors that the disease is in the county again. We do not want to lose any more lives due to a careless county,” he added.
Tabitha Njoki, a leader, called on NACADA to intervene.
