West Mugirango member of Parliament James Gesami has asked the Nyamira County Commissioner Joseph Rotich to ensure tea farmers who were arrested during a protest over low bonus payment are freed.
Speaking Sunday in Nyamira town, Gesami said farmers should not be arrested and detained for holding peaceful demonstrations over poor bonuses.
His remarks come after farmers from Tombe and Giachore tea factories who were protesting over low bonus payment were arrested on Tuesday last week.
“I ask Nyamira County Commissioner to make sure all tea farmers who were arrested are released because they did nothing wrong,” said Gesami.
He also said MPs from Nyamira County will hold a meeting with tea directors to understand why they pay low bonuses as compared to other regions in the country.
“I urge tea farmers to continue plucking their tea leaves instead of boycotting because that is also another great lossGesami,” added Gesami.
