Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Sicily Kariuki has said that the government is in the process of reviewing the National Youth Policy which she termed as currently out of date.
Speaking during the Youth Summit at State House in Nairobi, Kariuki said the policy would seek to focus on major issues affecting the youth such as crime and security and drug and substance abuse.
She also said that focus would be on employment as an opportunity to turn the youth into economic contributors of the country.
“We are in the process of reviewing the National Youth Policy which is somewhat out of date so that we are able to bring in the conversations that would be picking up from your conversation in addition to what else we have been hearing from the youth, so that then again we have the youth indeed driving agenda for this country,” Kariuki said.
She also pointed out that the government has initiated youth empowerment programs mainly headed by the National Youth Service.
“We will be focusing also on implementation of the national youth empowerment strategy, whose special emphasis runs from issues of youth and leadership participation, skill development and employment, as well as talent identification and development of ICT, especially the online jobs,” she said.
