Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) CEO Wilson Aruasa has urged Kenyans to seek kidney transplant and medication locally.
He said the services in Kenya are cheaper and efficient, compared to in international hospitals.
"MTRH conducts kidney transplant at a cost of Sh500,000 compared to Indian hospitals which do the same at Sh7,000,000. We have qualified doctors just like those from abroad," he said.
Speaking to journalists after conducting their 26th kidney transplant on Wednesday, Aruasa said NHIF now caters for kidney patients.
"NHIF covers the cost of consultation, dialysis and the transplant exercise. I urge Kenyans to take NHIF cards for quality health service," he added.
He also urged the national government to train more kidney transplant doctor since at the moment it's a drop in the ocean.
"More than 4,000,000 Kenyans suffer from kidney diseases, we therefore need more doctors for them to be attended to," he added.
Aruasa challenged the national government to reduce the cost of dialysis and drugs for kidney patients.
"The cost of single dialysis session at the Kenyatta Hospital is 5,000 and private hospital 9,000 which is most of them cannot afford," noted Aruasa.
