Residents of Nunow in Garissa County have issued a seven-day ultimatum to stop digging and collecting murram from a local communal land.
According to Ali Ismail Baraki, the community's spokesperson, the government forcibly took the land from them and, thereafter, brought in a Chinese company to dig murram from the site to rehabilitate the over Sh15 billion Modogashe- Nunow Road in Balambala Constituency.
"The government has forcefully taken part of our land without compensation and it has gone ahead to dig very deep trenches, close to 30 feet deep, without giving any warning sign or even a barrier around the area. This is a threat to the area residents and our cattle,” said Baraki.
The area residents have since filed a petition through the Ongoya and Wambola Advocates, where they have sued the KeNHA, the Attorney General and Nema for not taking into considerations the community's pleas.
The Modogashe-Nunow Road was commissioned last week by President Kenyatta and his deputy, Ruto during their three-day long visit to the North Eastern region.
