In a Wednesday tweet, the renowned scholar said he would support a constitutional process that engages consensus building, includes all Kenyans, seeks to do away with ethnic animosities and promises sustainability.

"I will SUPPORT a constitutional process that meets FOUR key criteria:  A. which engages in BROADEST consensus building B. promotes INCLUSIVITY at all levels, C. which seeks to DE-ETHNICIZE elections and D. offer the greatest overall financial SUSTAINABILITY, " his tweet read.

His intervention comes amid a raging debate on the prospect of a constitutional referendum to alter the country's governance structure.

The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) is in the process of compiling a report after collecting views from Kenyans.

Its recommendations could inform a referendum question.

Thirdway Alliance Party leader Dr Ekuru Aukot is also pushing his Punguza Mizigo Initiative whose fate will be determined by the 47 county assemblies.

Aukot's initiative seeks to significantly reduce political representation in the country by merging constituencies.

Critics of the initiative contend that the initiative if embraced could spell danger on devolution.
