Dozens of Kisii University students on Sunday evening escaped death narrowly along Ahero-Kisii highway after their bus veered of the road while avoiding head-on collision.
A truck headed from Kisii forced the bus's driver to veer off the road when he reportedly tried to overtake in a narrow highway that is currently under construction.
The institution's Assistant Dean of students Brother Francis Monari confirmed the incident, adding that those who survived were skating students who were from a trip.
According to him, despite the bus hitting a culvert and falling, none of the students was injured. However, he said, many of the suffered from a shock.
"Dear comrades. The information making rounds that our bus was involved in an accident last evening is true. As our skating students were coming from Kisumu around Ahero area, a truck that was over speeding and overtaking went straight for our bus and so the driver swerved to avoid the head on crash but hit a Calvert and the bus fell to its side," said Monari.
"I however wish to say that it was by Gods grace that none of our students was injured except for shock. Let's thank God for this was a clear save of his gracious presence and care for our university family. God bless us, God bless Kisii University and God bless our road users," he added.
Ever since getting chattered in 2013 from Egerton University, the institution does not have a history of road accidents involving buses attached to it.
Currently, the Kisii-Ahero road is under construction with African Development Bank being the major sponsor. It was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017.
The accident took place along the border of Homa Bay and Nyamira Counties. Previously, motorists have complained over the narrowness of the highway.
