Residents of Kondo village in Yatta sub-county have been educated on the modern ways of rearing cows.

Speaking to a veterinary officer Paul Kamande on Wednesday morning he stated that artificial insemination is better compared to natural insemination as it provides better breeds of cattle.

"In AI, you get to choose the best seed to implant in your cow at the best time compared to providing a bull for the cow that may be of poor quality," said Kamande.

He however stated that the freshian cows are vulnerable to diseases that may be transmitted by the local breed during mating.

"There are diseases that may be caused by mating two cows, for instance the freshian and local breed," he added.

The livestock doctor further explained that the semen is acquired from different places in the country and outside the country.

"We get the good quality seeds from Kabete in Kenya but I personally prefer from either Uganda or Tanzania," he added.

Farmers have therefore been encouraged to invest in their livestock's well-being by practising the modern ways of farming.
